Lincoln Rugby Side Loses To Teachers

A. sporting invasion of Canterbury Agricultural •College, Lincoln, yesterday afternoon by the Christchurch Teachers' College was repulsed—but not without the loss of Lincoln's prized Rugby reputation. Its senior team, winner of the Ellesmere sub-union competition this season, was beaten 8-3 by Teachers’ College. The visitors also won the senior B Rugby game, 20-19. and succeeded in the hockey and soccer matches as well. Lincoln College won the badminton, table tennis, golf, cross-country, miniature rifles and debating contests. Senior Rugby Victory against Lincoln College was a feather in the cap of the Teachers’ College A Rugby team. Lincoln, weakened by the absence of such leading plavers as K. Tremain, A. Coleman and C. Mitchell, gave one ot Its least convincing displays this season. whereas Teachers’ College made the most of its opportunities. Three senior players who attend the college. F. Jackson, M R. Taiaroa and P. G. Bark, provided stiffening in this capable XV In spite of the influence of these three accomplished footballers on the game, there was no mistaking the ability and courage of K. Hoskin, the Teachers' College first fiveeighths. He played a splendid game; in one movement he distinguished himself by tackling four men. one after the other. The forward encounter was a torrid one with neither pack gaining the upper hand. In the backs, however, Teachers’ College had an advantage, particularly in the Inside backs where the side was well served by Taiaroa, Hoskin and L. Price. J. Scott and K. Hagen plaved well in the Lincoln vanguard, while D. Dale, a lock, and R. Wilson, a loose forward, excelled for Teachers' College. G. Bradley, full-back, and I. Bassett, wing three-quarters, wfere good value in the Teachers’ College line. Lincoln did not make intelligent use of the wind In the first half and was behind, 3-5, at the interval. Teachers’ College made better use of the wind in the second half, holding its narrow lead and scoring again a few minutes from the end. Jackson, who played in the back of the scrum, scored two tries for Teachers' College. Bradlev converted one. J. Keoghan kicked a penalty goal for Lincoln. Senior B Rugby Playing with the wind in the first half, the Teachers’ College B Rugby team took a convincing 14-3 lead. Beggs and A. R. Taylor, for Lincoln, kept Teachers' College at bay and the only score of the half came after G. Barrell, the College centre-forward, had won a penalty bully. In the second half, however. Teachers’ College changed Its tactics. Its policy of hitting and following through brought the side four more goals and it won 5-0 Scorers for Teachers’ College in the second half were N. Fisher (2). Barrell and W Duncan. Soccer Teachers’ College had the better of the soccer game and won by 1 goals to 1. after leading 1-0 at half-time. D. Jerucm and I. Mansor. who each scored a goal, were the pick at the Teachers’ College forwards. R. Beckham, the right half. D. Duff, left full-back, and D. McCarthy, the goal-keeper, defended ably. J B. Milne was Lincoln’s goal scorer. Harriers , Lincoln took both the individual and team honours in the cross-country event. The race began and ended at the College. and the four-mile course Included two cultivated paddocks and 25 obstacles. The winner D Lucock (Lincoln), covered the distance in 2#min 17.8 sec for a clear-cut victory The first four men home in each team contributed to the teams' event. Lincoln won by B point*. It took the negative and the Teachers' College team of Misses R. Reynolds (leader). J. McGrath, and S. Held took the affirmative. Haslam was named the best speaker. Professor T W Walker, of Lincoln College, was the judge. Miniature Rifles The miniature rifles contest was won by the Lincoln College team, with a score of 1155.58 to Teachers’ College 1137.49 The only possible was gained by the Lincoln marksman. W. Riordan. 21-18. 14-21, 21-13; L. Adams beet M. Ryan. 19-21, 21-11. 21-19. Doubles. Alexander and Wright beat Saunderson and McNeil. 21-18. 21-16; Fowls and Adams lost to Penman and Riordan, 27-25. 13-21.19-21; Warrington and Williams beat Templar and Rvan. 21-10. 21-18. Lincoln College won by 8 matches. 17 games, to 1 match. 5 games. Golf. Badminton The golf contest consisted of three singles matches. Lincoln winning by 21 to I Results, with Lincoln names first, were: A. J. Allison beat C. McConnell. 4 and 3: D. Ballinger beat Miss J. Lummas. 1 up; R. Pennington halved with Miss A. Gardener. The badminton contest was a very close encounter, both teams winning eight matches. On a count-back, Lincoln College won by 12 points.
