PEOPLE IN THE PLAY
It seems unlikely that F. N. Coe, one of the South Island's leading squash rackets players for many years, will continue to play seriously much longer. Coe is living at Fairlie, some distance from Timaru, and is finding it increasingly difficult to obtain the hard match practice needed to stay in first-class condition. A former New Zeeland representative. he has won the Canterbury open title four times in the six years the event has been held.
A former New Zeeland Universities’ cross-country running and mile track champion, Murray Taylor,
is expected to compete for the Greymouth Harrier Club in inter-club events later in the season. Taylor should prove a valuable addition to the club's ranks, particularly for the Takahe-Akaroa relay event in September, As a member of the Canterbury University athletic and harrier clubs, Taylor was a consistent performer in Christchurch athletic events for three years. A University harrier “blue” and a former holder of the New Zealand universities’ mile record, Taylor is now teaching at Moana.
K. F. Laidlaw, who before he had to miss the AU Black trials through an injury, and who appeared certain to be the
centre for the AU Blacks in the first test against France, played his first game for some time last Saturday. Playing for Southland against Otago sub-unions, Laidlaw showed signs of the form that won him praise in South Africa. He scored one very good try and made openings foe three tries by his wings. ★ The vice-president of the Canterbury Table Tennis Association, Mr C. A. Clarke, is one of only
two qualified table tennis umpires in Christchurch. A member of the provincial executive for six years, Mr Clarke has acted as referee in many major tournaments. He plays for the National Airways < club, and has represented I Canterbury in lower; grade contests.
