ANDERTON HAS 53rd WINNER

The Wanderer Succeeds At Waimate When The Wanderer led the field home in the Morven Handicap at Waimate on Saturday it made the day memorable for his Wingatui trainer, H. A. Anderton. Not only did it take him further ahead on the list of leading trainers for the season but it also gave him the distinction of training more winners in any season since 1924, when statistics were first published in the New Zealand “Turf Register.”

The Wanderer was the fifty-third winner Anderton has saddled this season. Only twice before, since records have been taken, has the 50 mark been bettered or equalled The previous best was 52 winners prepared by the Trentham trainer, T. R. George, in the 1935-36 season. J. L McDonald, formerly of Te Awamatu, but now in Australia, was next best. Horses trained by him won 50 races in the 1950-51 season.

Training more winners than anyone else in a season is not new to Anderton. In the 1956-57 season he headed the trainers’ list with 81 winners. In the consecutive seasons meantime he has been the runner-up with 32, 37 and 40 winners respectively. The Wanderer, which carries the colours of Messrs A. G. and P. R. Dennis, was the 2/2 favourite for the Morven Handicap, the main flat event and second leg of the double at the Waimate Hunt Club's annual meeting. He was ridden from a trailing position into the lead on the home turn by his trainer’s son, Brian, and quickly went beyond challenging distance of the opposition. The first leg of the double, the Redcliff Hack ■ and Hunters' Flat Handicap, resulted in an easy win for Orderly, which is trained for Mr and Mrs E. J. Richards by E. J. EUis, at Washdyke

The holders of 589 5s tickets (74 on-course) shared in a double dividend of £lOB 6s for £l. Orderly carried 17911 10s tickets in a total pool of £19,295 ss. The meeting was held in fine but overcast weather and the track was in good

winter order although cutting out fairly badly in the back straight. There was a good attendance. On - course investments amounted ot £17,113 10s, including £lBO9 on the double, compared with £17,606 10s last year. Easy For Orderly Orderly, whose best in six earlier races this season had been a fourth against the hack sprinters at Ashburton two starts "back, regained winning form as a miler in the Redcliff Hack and Hunters’ Flat Handicap, the first leg of the double. Orderly followed Persian Light into the last half-mile and ran past the pacemaker three furlongs out Buckshot and Mon Roi led the chase after Orderly into the straight but could not make any impression on him in the last furlong. Orderly beat Buckshot by a length and Mon Roi was half a length back third. Cirrus Song came home well from the middle of the field for fourth two lengths beck He shaded the tiring Persian Light. Then came Chatloch and the top-weight Korallion, which was in front for the first furlong but did not appear to be handling the track well and was under pressure a fair way out. The win favourite Flying Lancer was ninth. He galloped scratchily in the early stages and six furlongs out was a lonely last in a strungout field. Top-Weight Wins Hie Wanderer, one of two runners in the field from H.

A. Anderton’s Wingatui stable, carried the tonweight of 9-0 into the lend on the home turn in the Morven Handicap, sprinted clear by five lengths as they started the run home and was being eased near the end to win by two lengths and a half from Persuasive. The Wanderer was one of the smartest beginners but B J Anderton eased him back to a trailing position behind Brookfields Lad and Mighty Son as the field let! the straight Running into the last six furlongs Brookflelds lAd was a clear leader. Mighty Son had dropped back to second alongside The Wanderer and Matlock ran three wide alongside Brown Watch and Persuasive in the third line. Marsana and The Era were next ahead of The Ranger. Except for Brown Watch, which had been restrained and had dropped back to the tail of the field, there was little change in their positions at the half-mile But a furlong later Anderton worked The Wanderer off the fence and Matlock had to go wide to make a line of three in the lead Brookfields Lad was beaten in a stride or two and The Wanderer dashed clear before the straight. Persuasive, third into line, led the chase after him from the furlong but it was a hopeless task Marsana finished strongly for third four lengths behind Persuasive. He out-finished Matlock by three lengths. Then there was a length to The Ranger which was followed in by Brown Watch, Brookflelds Lad, Mighty Son and The Era.
