M.P.’s Plea For State Aid (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 14. State aid for private schools was called for by Mr D. J. Riddiford (National, Wellington Central), when he made his maiden speech in the House of Representatives last night. Mr Riddiford. who said he was speaking as a Roman Catholic, said he supported State aid for Catholic schools and for other private schools. Denominational schools should be aided by the Government in accordance with needs of the individual schools, he said.
“This system is followed in England, France, Canada and Holland, and would be wholly to the ~ advantage of this country," said Mr Riddiford, speaking in. the Address-in-Reply debate. “It is horrifying to me that in some schools there is no provision for the teaching of the principles of Christianity," said Mr Riddiford. These principles were the basis for democracy—freedom and justice, he said. Mr Riddiford sgU he hoped that provision wwM! be made for religious instruction in all I schools.
