CREDIT TO WOMEN
Advice To Retailers (NZ Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 11. Advice to retailers to be wary of giving credit to married women was given by Mr C. Astley. S.M., in the Otahuhu Magistrate’s Court yesterday when refusing to make orders for imprisonment in default of payment of debts owing by married women to business firms. “If retailers run their businesses on a credit basis they should see that credit is given to the head of the house—the husband,” Mr Astley said. “In New Zealand if a woman is married the presumption is that she has no money except what she receives from her husband for housekeeping and living expenses. This is her husband’s money, not hers, ano it cannot be said that such women have any income. “Retailers who give them credit run the risk of not being able to recover from them.” Mr Astley said that the Courts would not enforce payment from married women, unless it could be shown that they had a separate income.
