Good-design Exhibition To Be Held In City
New Zealand's first industrial design exhibition will be held in Christchurch in November. More than 300 products, selected by a panel for their good design, will be exhibited. The exhibition will be held in the Durham street Art Gallery from November 6 to November 20. said the president of the Design Association of New Zealand (Mr Paul Pascoe) yesterday Twenty - eight categories, among them household products, garden equipment, plastics, pottery, electrical fittings, office equipment and furniture, radio and television sets, sports and travel goods, and typographical examples would be displayed.
“The selection will be made by members of the executive, who already have done much work in preparation,” said Mr Pascoe. “It is expected that New Zealand manufacturers will accept the invittaions being sent to them to nominate goods for selection in the exhibition, knowing the worth of good design m industry. “Because of its selectiveness and the. limiting of categories, and also because it is the first public exhibition to he organised by the association. it will be. perhaps, a modest one. However, it will be opened during carnival week in Christchurch, when many visitors come to the city, and will attract wide public interest The
designing of stands and arrangement of exhibits will be done by professional men on the executive." The association would award its special good-design label to manufacturers of the goods exhibited. In this, the association would follow the practice established so successfully by the British Council of Industrial Design. Mr Pascoe said. Good - design labels awarded to products displayed in the permanent design centre in London had resulted in an average increase of sales of those products of 700 per cent. Mr Pascoe said that the association confidently expected to exhibit a comprehensive selection of the bestdesigned goods manufactured in New Zealand. In this practical way. Mi Pascoe said, the association, recently incorporated as a non-profit making society, would forward its aim of fostering good-design in this country and encouraging public appreciation of industrial design.
