Withdrawal Of J. Callaghan The Canterbury. South Island, and former New Zealand representative goalkeeper. J. Callaghan. has withdrawn front the Canterbury representative training squad for the remainder of the season. This information was given to last evening’s meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Football Association by the selector (Mr W. W. Carruthers). Callaghan had been unable to attend training sessions for the representative squad for several weeks, said Mr Carruthers. He had said that he wished to withdraw from the squad fdr this season. The New Zealand goalkeeper against Costa Rica in 1959, and on the tour to Tahiti last season, Callaghan was reserve for the New Zealand team in the first test against the touring English side last month. He has been the regular Canterbury and South Island goalkeeper for several seasons, and played in the first Jones Cup match against Otago this season. Interest On Banks Peninsula Evidence of interest in soccer on Banks Peninsula was received at last evening's meeting of the Canterbury Football Association’s management committee. The secretary (Mr G. H. Williams) read a letter received from Mr T. Wilson, sole teacher at the Barry’s Bay School. Mr Wilson said that * he thought that interest in soccer could be i generated in schools on Banks Peninsula. “A first step would be the introduction of skills and rules in one physical education period," said Mr Wilson. “This is what we have always been looking for.” said the chairman (Mr J. Smith). The association will supply two bails to Mr Wilson and will oTer an,y other assistance possible. It is hoped that the schools at Wainui and Duvauchelle will join this scheme. Wellington v. Canterbury (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 4. The annual Wellington v. Canterbury soccer match will be held at the Basin Reserve, Wellin,'ton. on August 19. This was decided at tonight’s meeting of the Wellington Soccer Association. A return match will be held in Christchurch in September. 1
