GOOD TRIAL
Thumper As Hurdler Thumper heightened interest ip his hurdling debut at Washdyke on Saturday when he schooled brilliantly at Riccarton yesterday. Ridden by T. Wilson. Thumper jumped almost without fault over the first five of six flights, but was in too close at the last jump and rapped it. He maintained a strong pace from the start. Saltash (R. L. Browning) ended a run over eight fences with a lead of nearly two lengths on Coral Kay (J. L. Coulter) but gained all 'hat advantage right at the end, at the brush double. Coral Kay was a clear leader for the most part and. kept to a leisurely pace, he jumped cleanly and evenly. The more experienced Saltash outjumped him at the double the last time but he was in no serious trouble Balance (N. Cowles) began with Saltash and Coral Kay but jumped slowly and soon dropped far behind. However. he managed to get around safely. Earlier Browning dodged injury in a fall. He was riding Kaikuri, which fell at the second of the double when schooling with an unraced member of A. J. Williams's team.
