SOUTHLAND FROSTS

Zero Readings In Parts <N.Z Press Association) GORE, July 4. Below zero temperatures were recorded in parts of Southland and Central Otago today. At Parawa, 16 miles from Lumsden, the temperature reading early in the morning was minus 6.2 degrees Fahrenheit, or 38.2 degrees of frost. Yesterday morning Parawa had a frost of 29.3 degrees. At Otureha, in Central Otago, the frost reading was 35 degrees. Frosts in other parts of Central Otago ranged from 20 to 30 degrees. Eight inches of snow are still on the ground at Lumsden. where a frost of 16.5 degrees was recorded this morning. A hoar frost gripped the Balfour district, which had a reading of 16 degrees. Widespread severe falls in temperature ended any immediate threat of flooding from the thawing snow, but the frosts added to the problems of farmers. Heavy stock losses are expected in hilly country throughout West Otago, and in northern and eastern Southland. Among farm animals which escaoed entombing snow drifts, pleurisy and pneumonia are likely to take their toll.
