TUITION IN DRIVING
(Parliamentary Reporter] WELLINGTON, July 4.
Two questions were asked in Parliament this afternoon by Mr N. E. Kirk (Opposition, Lyttelton). He asked the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine' whether, in the interests of greater road safety, and to ensure a uniformly high standard of driving instruction he would consider introducing certificates of competency for professional driving instructors. In a note to the question, Mr Kirk said that in Christchurch newspapers last February an advertisement appeared which said: “There is no control over driving instructors. Any new driver who gets his licence today crn advertise himself tomorrow as a Governmentlicensed driving instructor.”
Mr Kirk asked the Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) whether “in spite of his announced intention to increase significantly New Zealand Railway Road Service Lus concession fares, he will give an assurance that he will not interfere in any way with the highly-success-ful excursion fares introduced by the Minister of Railways in the Labour Government to promote holiday and tourist traffic to Akaroa.”
