QUALITY OF N.Z. WINES
Claims “Arrant Nonsense” “The Press- Special Service WELLINGTON, July L Arrant nonsense about New Zealand wines being as good as imported makes could only do the New Zealand winemakers harm in the long run. said the president of the Wellington Wine and Food Society (Mr A. Murray-Oliver) at the society’s annual meeting. “One of the functions of a society such as this must be to take an interest in and try to encourage our local wines,” he said. “As you ■know, we have served them ion two occasions and it has ■ been quite obvious that our members have been relieved when we have returned to imported wines. “We will continue to take an interest in New Zealand wines—we count on you to be fair about them and also to counter such absurd claims as are occasionally made that the ■ wines produced here are as : good as any that are imported.” New Zealand wines had 'made surprising advances in recent years, said Mr MurrayOliver, and the future might I become quite promising, j Nevertheless, the society did i not expect to serve New Zealland wines to members "for a ;little time.”
