Western Beats Timaru Team "Th* Prere" Special (tertocs TIMARU, July 2. Superior teamwork, passing and positional play gave Western (Christchurch) a decisive 6-0 win over Thistle iTimaru) in a Chatham Cup elimination match at the Caledonian Ground. Timaru, on Saturday. It was a rather lifeless match played on a heavy ground, The Western side included several representative players. and the former New Zealand eaptain, W. Rodger, was in outstanding form. The splendid play of K. Clark thwarted many Thistle attacks. However, the form of the two youngsters in the side, I. Laby and D. Tarkington—was equally good, and they obviously have a One future. Thistle’s defence came through a torrid test commendably. A mistake by K. Murray led to Western’s first goal, but he otherwise played extremely well and the ball control and all-round p!ay of E. Husband at right half equalled those of any of the Western players. The first 10 minutes produced some inconclusive midfield play, with Western showing the better combination. Western scored first when a pass back to the goalkeeper, D. Wakefield, went past Wakefield and rolled into the net- Western went to a 2-0 lead with a good goal by Torkington from a lob pass by R. Durant. A high shot was then deflected back to P. Frost, who made the score 3-0 with a hard drive. Western stormed back to the attack and a beautifully-placed header from Frost to K. Olley into the net gave Western a 4-0 advantage at half-time. Thistle forced two corners, but it was Western’s turn ' again when Durant headed to Frost, who scored. A Western free kick just outside I the penalty area was tipped > over the top by Wakefield. From the resultant corner the 1 ball went through a melee of , plavers to Rodger, who scored i from close in with a hard i kick to make the final score, ; Western 6, Thistle 0.
