AKBAR WINS HORSE SOCIETY TRIALS
(New Zealand Press Association)
WANGANUI. July 2. The Two Hawke's Bay entrants in an eight-horse field took the first two placlngs at the New Zealand Horse Society’s fifth annual national one-day trials held on the Fordell properties of Mr W. G. Lewis and Mrs D, Sutherland, Wanganui, on Saturday. The winner of the Hawke's Bay regional trial the previous week, Mrs J. R. McKenzie’s grey hunter, Akbar, ridden by the owner, won the open event, the Forest Gate Trophy, after a keen duel with Limonite, ridden by Miss S. Talbot (Onga Onga). The phases—dressage, crosscountry, and show-jumping —were held in fine weather, but with a cold wind prevailing during the day. ■Hie competitor gaining the fewest penalty points in toe three sections was the winner. Limonite won the dressage, but Akbar was ahead after the cross-country test (although only by a slight margin), and everything depended upon how Mrs McKenzie’s grey fared in the show-jumping. Only Id points behind the leader. Limonite completed the show- jumping course without
a fault, and the final result still hung in the balance. However, Akbar and Mrs McKenzie were equal to toe occasion, and cleared the show jumps in faultless style to win the Forest Gate Trophy.
