TENNIS R. Wilson Beats Fraser In Wimbledon Singles

(N.Z. Press Assn.■ —4 Copyright) WIMBLEDON, July 2. The reigning Wimbledon champion, Neale Fraser, was beaten in the men’s singles yesterday by the brilliant playing of the British Davis Cup player, R. Wilson.

Wilson won l-«, 6-0, 13-11, 9-7 on the sweltering centre court where the mercury read over 95 degrees. His ground snots, volley and clever placements were far better than Fraser's, that is. after Ute first set, during which Wilson hardly won a point Fraser could give no excuse for his play, or to explain his defeat. “There is just nothing to say.” he said. “My knee was fine. Wilson played far better than I did. He deserved to win. He played brilliantly.” The elated Wilson said: “It was bo hot out there I was in a trance in the fourth set” Of the top seeds who played on Friday, Australia's R. Emerson put up the best show to beat the young British player, R. Taylor, in straight sets, 6-3. 6-1, 6-1. Emerson Is a strong tip to take the singles title. Luis Ayala (Chile) also has hit a good streak at the right time and looked a certain semi-finalist when he trounced W. Knight (Britain), 9-7. 6-4. 6-2. The most interesting performance of the afternoon came from Australians Fraser and Emerson, who played brilliant, title-winning tennis to beat the veteran American, Gardner Mulloy, and Segal in the second round of the men’s doubles. Apart from the FraserWilson upset, Friday’s play produced very little exciting tennis. R. Laver (Australia) beat his team mate R. Hewitt in three unexciting sets while Miss M. Smith had very little trouble in beating the Hun. gsrian, Mrs Z. Korboczy, 6-2. 6-1 Miss Ann Haydon, Britain’s main hope for the women’s singles title, went out in three sets to the South African, Miss Renee Schuurman, 6-3. 4- 2-6. The third-seed Miss Haydon could not get her big service to work, and was in continual trouble handling the Sou*ll African girl’s clever stroke* Results included (seeded playera are indicated by asterisks): MEN'S SINGLES Fourth Round M.
