MISS HOWARD IN CLASH
Advice To New Member (N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 29. The new Government member for Rotorua (Mr H. R. Lao wood) clashed briefly with the veteran Miss M. B Howard (Sydenham) during his maiden speech in the House of Representatives tonight. Miss Howard told Mr Lapwood: “You'd better watch your step, brother.” The incident occurred after Mr Lapwood had accused the former Labour Government of “three years of muddlement and confusion.” There were comments from the Onposition benches, and Mr Speaker (Mr Algie) asked members to be quiet while the new member made his speech. Mr F. Hackett (Grey Lynn) rose to a point of order and said: “If you insist on our remaining dumb while the member speaks like that, you’ve got another think coming.” There were protests from Government members, and Mr Speaker said he didn't think Mr Hackett should have said that. Continuing his speech. Mr Lapwood said: “I will not re. tract one statement I've made." Miss Howard: You’d better watch your step, brother.
