TROTTING Addington Stakes Up By £l200 Next Month

Stakes for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s national meeting at Addington on August 18 and 26 have been increased by £l2OO to £14,600. This was announced last evening by the president of the club (Mr J. K. Davidson). The club hoped to make further stake increases during the season but it was intended that trotters and slow-class horses would benefit more than those in "so-called feature races," he said.

The club was operating to a schedule of stakes paid during the 1959-60 season and any increases would be made on a percentage basis of the schedule, with stakes built up to the nearest £5O. said Mr Davidson, Any alterations in stakes would be made after taking the class and distance of the races concerned into consideration. The Christchurch Handicap, the main race for trotters on the first day of the meeting, will be run over 10 furlongs

under invitation conditions this year. The limit for the race will be 2inin 51sec. but horses assessed at 2min 52sec may start. The stake this year will be £950. compared with £BOO last year when the limit was looser.

The Winter Handicap, which will also be run under invitation conditions, will carry a stake of £llOO on the second day of the meeting This race will be run over 13 furlongs, with a limit of 3min 43sec. but horses on 3min 44sec may start. Last year the race had a limit of 3min 44sec and the stake was only £B5O.

Stakes for trotters were increased considerably for the last New Zealand Cup meeting and it is unlikely there will be any substantial changes made when the cup programme is framed for next November. The stakes

paid for the national meeting for fast-class trotters are about the same as were paid at the last cup meeting The Louisson Handicap will again be the feature race for pacers on the first day of the meeting. The limit for the race is unchanged at 3min 35sec for 13' furlongs, but the stake has been increased from £l2OO to £l3OO.

The National Handicap, the main race for pacers on the second day of the meeting I last year, carried a stake of (£l4OO. This has been increased Ito £l5OO but the limit is unj changed at 4min 26sec for ; two miles. I The slow - class trotters’ i races will each have a limit ’ of 3min 49sec for 13 furlongs. I the same as last year. The | stakes have been increased Iby £5O to £550 The sprint races each day have had their stakes increased by £5O to £950 and the limits each day remain at 2m in 45sec for 10 furlongs. Most limits for other races have, not been changed but most stakes have been increased by about £5O a race. One exception is the Canterbury Challenge Stakes, a race for three and four-year-i olds, run over 10 furlongs The stake for this race is unchanged at £BOO. Drove Programme The Sydney trainer.
