SCHOOLS’ GAME

Christchurch, Timaru Draw Christchurch Boys’ High School drew with Timaru Boys’ High School 3-all in their annual Rugby match at Straven road yesterday. Timaru had a slight advantage in both spells, but competent defence kept out all bu* one of the Timaru attacks. The teams were:— Christchurch Boys’ High School: D. Dearsley; T. R. Mehrtens. R. Grenfell. J. Renaut: D Johnston. A. Bradbury: R. Marks; L. Mclntosh; M. Collins. L. A. Woodham. D. J. Mather, K. Hill; G Harrison, P. Harrow, H. Dunn. Timaru Boys’ High School: J. Wilson: R. Herrick, L. R. Prebble, R. Best; T. Laurnea, G. Rollinson; L. Taiaroa; J. Meyer; L. Newbigen, B Chalmers. M. K. West, J. G. Rowan: D. I. Walton, M. Scott. T. J. Brown. The Timaru forwards played well for most of the game and gave their backs more than enough ball, especially from the line-outs. The Timaru backs found the tackling a little too deter--mined, however, and in the dying stages the Timaru fiveeighths kicked instead of passing. The Timaru backs three times made ground in spectacular movements and it was the centre. Prebble, who found the gaip and ran his wings into position. But a desperate defence just managed to stop the movements a few feet short of the line ieach time. Taiaroa, at half-iback for Timaru, proved a handful in broken play, and his passing was generally long and well directed. i The Christchurch backs 'suffered from the close attention of the Timaru flankers, Newbigen and Rowan, and only once or twice did they look caoable of breaching the defence Johnston, who moved in from second five-eighths to first five-eighths when Bradburyleft the field injured, was a forceful, if unspectacular player, and Grenfell, at centre, saved his side several times with his covering. Outstanding Forward The best forward on the ground was Newbigen, who tried hard to score in the last quarter. He broke through several times from the lineouts and his determined running demanded the staunchest of tackles. Rowan, on the other side of the scrum, kept close to the ball, and the locks. Chalmers and West, were successful in the lineouts.

Until he -was injured Woodham matched the jumping of Timaru in the line-outs and his fellow lock, Mather, was resourceful as well as aggressive in the tight. Hill once started a movement that nearly ended in a try, and Harrison applied himself vigorously in the rucks and mauls. Christchurch had four comparatively easy penalty kicks at goal, but each was wide. Brown scored a try for Timaru Bovs' High School and Dearsley, who moved from full-back to second five-eighths in the second spell, scored a try for Christchurch Boys’ High School. Mr R. O. McDowell was referee. In a curtain-raiser between the schools’ second fifteens. Timaru beat Christchurch by 14 points to 12.
