RACING Irrepressible In Form For Oamaru Cup

Wingatui form proved of good value for the Oamaru Winter Cup last year, when Promise won after minor placings in main races on his home trade. If there is no deviation from that pattern this year, Irrepressible will take beating in the Oamaru Winter Cup on Saturday. In her first of two starts at the Dunedin meeting Irrepressible won the Birthday Handicap in sound style.

Irrepressible is trained at Wingatui by D. P. Wilson, who nearly managed to make a clean sweep in the main flat races at the Dunedin meeting. Fire Bar, carrying the Wilson colours, beet all but McGregor in the Provincial Handicap before beating a fairly strong field of milers in the Queen Elizabeth Handicap on the last day of the meeting. Irrepressible io second topweight in the Oamaru Winter Cup with 9-4, and he is 3!b below Desert Chief, which raced against the sprinters at Wingatui. Irrepressible won the Birthday Handicap. one mile and a half, under 8-12 but with a different rider and ridden differently she did not make an impression in the Provincial Handicap two days later. She carried 7lb more in the Provincial Handicap than in the Birthday Handicap, but the run of the race rather than increased poundage did much to account for her failure. Wide Out For a start she raced four wide close to the front. Then she drifted back into the ruck, and there was no noticeable quickening in her finish. J. R, Dowling rode Irrepressible in the Birthday Handicap, and has the ride again on Saturday. R. J. Skelton, who rode the Timanova mare in the Provincial Handicap, will

ride Rhythm Rein at Oamaru. Rhythm Rein raced three times at Wingatui for two fourths. He was a weakening fourth in behind Fire Bar, Compensate, and Ravelston last Saturday, but came right from the back to reach the lead in the straight. Eartier at the meeting he was fourth in the Provincial Handicap, and finished fairly resolutely for that position, so he must be given a chance over the Oamaru Cup distance, which is just short of 11 furlongs. Past Winner The Provincial Handicap third was the Riccarton veteran, ShoaL This was more like her real form, and she filled a place at good odds after a week run in the Birthday Handicap. ShoaL now nine, won this race three years ago. Tadpole is being switched back to the flat after steeplechasing. His latest run over country was at Riverton when he was runner-up to No Offence in the Great Western. Not long before he won over country at Invercargill. Tadpole has much more

galloping ability than most ’chasers, even those of the best class, and has fashioned a good handicap record in the south. Lack of recent racing could be a handicap, but not an insuperable one if he has done a useful amount of work on the tracks. The race should have further value too; it should fit him for a jumping campaign ait the Hawke’s Bay meeting where he was placed last year. Phil’s Choice narrowly and rather luckily beat Irrepressible over 11 furlongs at Ashburton two starts back, but weakened to twelfth after pacemaking in the Waimate Cup. He might not be one of the stronger fancies, but could run well on a track where he showed good form as a hack. Kastanea and Omaha, both from Riccarton, should be the best on the minimum. Kastanea was third and Omaha fifth in the Waimate Cup, and neither has raced since.

Strong finishes marked their runs at Waimate, where the luck of the race went all against Otnaha.
