THE AMERICAN ATLAS-CENTAUR SPACE VEHICLE, 105ft high, which, after launching tests, will be used for interplanetary probes next year and the “soft landing” of instruments on the moon in 1963. The rocket, shown on the launching pad at Cape Canaveral, Florida, consists of a modified Atlas intercontinental ballistic missile topped by a Centaur upper stage. The Centaur stage will be the first space vehicle powered by liquid hydrogen rocket fuel.
