HAMMER MARBLE FOR FRANCE
Cairn Of Peace To Be Erected
A small block of marble from Hanmer has been sent to Versatile*, France, as a New Zealand contribution to a c»irn of peace which will be unveiled in October at the site of the world ploughing championship. The idea for the cairn's erection originated in Canada in 1953 when the first world contest for the EsSb golden pl >ugh was held. The underlying thought was that a chain of such monument* to mankind’s endeavours in tilling the soil should eventually span the world. The cairn of peace at Versailles is only a short distance fr to the paddock in which the 30 entrants from 19 nations will compete for the title of world ploughing champion. The cairn of peace will include pieces of stone fr >m al! parts of the world where ploughing contests are held to select competitors for the world final. On each stone is engraved the country of origin and the whole will be surmounted by a symbolic plough, a replica of the golden plough trophy. New Zealand's Hanmer s’one is six inches long and three inches deep and the lettering “New Zealand" has already beer, inscribed On the s’-'ne in Fra ore New Zealand will be represented at the con'est by 'he winner o' the National final for the A'lantic silver plough at Out’•m near Dunedin, on July £9.
