COMMUNIST CONGRESS
No Comment By Govt. (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, June 9. The Australian Government has clamped down on information about its reported refusal of visas to Russian Communist delegates who were to attend the Australian Communist Party congress in Sydney. But the decision to refuse the visas was confirmed unofficially in Canberra. Departmental officials, claiming to be acting under orders, refused to discuss the matter. Yesterday, it was reported from London that Moscow Radio saw the refusal by Australia as “an act in the cold war spirit.” The Australian Prime Minister (Mr Menzies) said the matter was one for the immigration Minister, Mr A. R. Downer.
