CYCLES WITHOUT LIGHTS

Traffic Department Campaign An attempt to reduce the number of accidents involving cyclists during winter is being made by the City Council traffic department with a special campaign against persons riding cycles without lights. The assistant traffic superintendent of the City Council (Mr H. W. Birdling) said yesterday that traffic officers would be on special duty between 5.30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Particular attention would be paid to areas near hotels and any person whose cycle did not have both a rear and front light would be reported for prosecution. Mr Birdling said statistics showed that the greatest number of accidents occurred between the hours of 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. In winter the number of accidents between those hours showed a marked increase. The district officer of the Transport Department (Mr D. L. Hogan) said department officers would also be paying particular attention to cycles without lights over the next few months. Many cyclists seemed to be under a misapprehension as to when they were required to use their lights. The regulations said lights had to be on 30 minutes after sunset. “Those cyclists who, because they finish work between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., think they do not need a light could find themselves in trouble for the department will prosecute offenders.” said Mr Hogan.
