Manchester Chair Appointment (N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 9. Dr. Peter Whittle, formerly of Wellington, has been appointed professor of mathematical statistics at Manchester University. Dr. Whittle, aged 34. is the son of Mr and Mrs Peary Whittle, of Island Bay, Wellington. He was educated at Wellington College and Victoria University. He was appointed to the applied mathematics laboratory of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in 1948, and in 1949 was awarded a post-graduate scholarship in mathematics at Uppsaia University in Sweden. where he took his doctorate. He returned to NewZealand and continued his work with the D.S.I.R. until 1959 when he was appointed lecturer in mathematics at Cambridge University. Dr. Whittle has established an international reputation in the field of mathematical statistics, particularly in time series analysis.
