ENGINEERING SOCIETY

Annual Ball Last Evening The Engineering Society of the School of Engineering (University of Canterbury) held its annual ball for practising engineers, engineering students and engineering school staff in the Winter Garden last evening. About 420 persons attended. Guests were received by the immediate past president of the society (Professor N. M. MacElwee) and Mrs MacElwee. and the chairman Mr M. J. Grant). Specially invited guests included: the Leader of the Opposition Mr Nash); the vice-chancellor of the University of Canterbury (Dr. L. L. Pownall) and Mrs Pownall; the Pro-ohancellor of the University of Canterbury (Mr E. B. E. Tayflor) and Mrs Taylor; the dean of the engineering faculty of the University of Canterbury (Professor S. R. Siemon) and Mrs Siemon; the registrar of the University of Canterbury (Mr G. G. Turbott) and Mrs Turbott; the bursar of the faculty of engineering (Mrs A. M. Unwin) and Mr Unwin; the secretary of the Law Society (Mr N. Thompson); the president of the Accountants’ Society (Mr T. Hayes): Dr. G. B. Battersby and Mrs Battensby: Mr M. J. W. Davis and Mrs Davis; Professor H G. Hopkins and Mrs Hopkins; and Professor H. T. Adams and Mrs Adams. Brocade Frock Mrs MacElwee wore a fulllength brocade frock, featuring a tiny all-over gold pattern on an ivory background. The skirt was swept to back fullness, and the fitting bodice had a square neckline. Mrs Siemon chose a gown of silver and gold brocade. It was classically styled, with a full-length gored skirt, and a draped neckline. Mrs Pownall’s dress was of gun-metal blue raw silk, and featured a strapless draped bodice with a self-stole attached at one side, and a fuil-lenigth skirt with slight fullness. Cartoons depicting engineering design problems hung in the alcoves of the ball room. Hanging baskets of ferns and autumn leaves featured in the decoration, and a big pedestal bowl of hydrangeas and gold chrysanthemums stood in the foyer. Members of the ball committee were Messrs R. F. Power (chairman), M. M. Noble, A. A. Brown, P. W Moore, M. J. Grant, R. S. Gibbons, J. F. Webley.
