GARMENTS OF WOOL

SA. Awards Contest South African manufacturers have been doing wonders with wool and are producing haute couture garments all their own. says the "New Zealand Draper and Allied Retailer” magazine. The New Zealand Wool Board recently received material from the South African Academy of Fashion on its 1981 wool award competition in which manufacturers were invited to enter wool garments designed for the younger woman This competition saw award winners of real quality The suit section winners ranged from a black wool two-piece seven-eighth suit—the jacket to be worn with or without a belt—with a mink marmot trimming, to a mink-coloured jersey-cloth trimmed with off-white at the collar and flap pockets The blazer jacket was fully lined. A dawn-to-evening suit in black wool was also an eyecatcher. It had batwing sleeves, a real Persian lamb collar and matching pompom at the ends of the tie belt. In the easy-on-the-pocket range in coats, a warm cinnamon coat cut on slim lines won out. It was simple and smart, with a lavish buttonacross collar to keep winter winds at bay. It sold at £8 19s 6d. At the other end of the scale was a loosefitting pure wool coat with a Persian lamb sub-collar tied in an artist’s bow. This cost £32 19s 6d. Black Dresses Three black dresses were included in the five winners of the afternoon dress section. One was a dress which could be worn two ways—as a simple sheath black frock with a deep collar clipping on to a wide square neck, or completely unadorned, leaving the plain neckline to speak for itself. Another black frock was enlivened by two fly-away fringed panels in front. The last black frock featured a softly pleated full skirt, a fitting bodice, and a deep V crossover neckline.
