Corriedale Flock’s Production Record
'THE Corriedale flock on the 788-acre Waipara Downs property of Mr F. J. Bain has demonstrated very well the dual purpose qualities of the breed during the last season. The farm ranges from light flats to medium downs and comparatively little topdressing has been done, but all of the stock are in great heart. Cropping includes about 25 acres in wheat and a similar acreage in barley. Some 1600 ewes were put to the ram last year and from the lambin-g beginning in mid-August 1800 lambs were docked, giving a Lambing percentage of 112 per cent At about three months of age. the first draft of 522 wether lambs were taken off the mother in midNovember. These killed out at 30.51 b with 67.5 per cent, graded as first quality. Ewe lambs in the drop were re-
tained for flock replacements. After seven weeks on rape a second draft of 188 lambs killed out at an average of 35!b with 97 per cent, first quality. Within two weeks still another selection of 201 went off to the works to kill at 35.41 b with 80 per cent, qualifying for first-quality grading. On the same day 72 shorn lambs were also killed and 21 of these went better than 371 b The skins from the second and third drafts averaged 9s fid each. In addition to giving this good lamb drop, the mothers cf these lambs cut an average of 11 jib of wool for the 1959-60 season. And, according to the owner. the drafts this season did not weigh as well as in the previous seasons, this being attributable to the very dry conditions experienced in October and November.
