Ashburton Fanciers’ Show Attracts Record Entries

The continuous, high-shrilled chatter of budgerigars, the crowing of roosters, the warbling of pigeons, and a blaze of colours to equal those in the gayest flower shops, made an exciting scene in the Ashburton Sports Hall yesterday when the Ashburton Fanciers’ Society held the first day of its sixty-eighth annual show. With 1341 entries, the society set a new record and now holds the distinction of conducting the largest show—with the exception of the Royal Sydney Show—in the Southern Hemisphere. There were 200 more entries than in the recent Christchurch show.

Apart from the homer pigeon section, all the judging was completed in good tune yesterday. The presi. dent of the society (Mr G. H. Nicoll) said that in future years there would have to be two judges in this section to cope with the increased entries. The new budgerigar room—built by members of the committee at a cost of £7O was a big improvement. In previous shows the budgerigars were crowded into a small committee room which was quite unsuitable. Although there were only a few persons in the hall curing the day, there was a large attendance last evening and figures were much higher than last year. A big crowd is expected today for the children’s pet parade, and for the judging of the cat classes. E. W. Tippins, of Christchurch was one of the most successful exhibitors. His White Leghorn cockerel was judged the best in the show, other than game fowl or bantam. The best game fowl was owned by C. C. Minty, of Christchurch, and the best bantam exhibited by R. E. Mahan, of Oamairu. The society’s president, who has been an exhibitor for 44 years, also had a successful day. In the Orpington section, he won the South Island championship and a cup, as well as a cup for the best black rosecombed bantam. .Another old exhibitor was O. C. Morriss, of Ashburton, who won the New Zealand championship for an Ancona pullet. In the homer pigeon section, W. Ellem had a fair share of successes. The best fancy pigeon was owned by W. T. Scott of Temuka. H. Mclntosh was successful in the budgerigar section, winning the premium award. H. Bostock, of Ashburton, owned the best bird of the opposite sex. A pleasing feature of the show was the number of young competitors who won prizes. Judges’ Comments Judges agreed that the standard of the entries was up to that of last year's Ashburton show, and some classes were as pood as - those entered in the Christchurch show. The winning entries in many cases were described as "outstanding” b\ the judges. Fancy Bantams.—The best fancy bantam, a rose comb pullet, was of excellent type and could compete in any show in the country, said the judge, Mr B E, Graham, of Amberley. The winning black Pekin bird was also of ven - high quality. Most popular varieties were well represented, and the display was quite pleasing, he said. Heavy breed Poultry and Juvenile Section.—Mr S. E Frost, from Waipara, who judged these sections, considered the show’ to be one of the best in the South Island at the present time. Generally, the quality of the birds was up to last year’s standard, with the winning birds better than last year The heavy breed section was the biggest In the poultry sections this year, said Mr Frost. Game Fowl and Game Bantams.—With the standard definitely up to last year’s, the judge. Mr J. M. Digby, of Ashburton, considered that the best game bird would compare w-ell with the best anywhere in New Zealand. The winin ng cock bird was outstanding, and the duckling which took first prize was an "extra good" bird, said Mr Oigby. Not a great deal of difficulty was experienced in selecting the winning birds, and the duckling class birds "tailed ofF’ after the winners had been selected. Fancy Pigeons—Judged by Mr G. L. Clark, of Christchurch, the general standard of the Jacobin. African owls and Modena pigeons was of a very high he considered. Closelv following these were the pouters and fantails, but the quality of the tumblers was only medium. This year the section had increased in entries as well as the quality improving, he said. The outstanding white Jacobin in the Juvenile section was an outstanding bird. Mr Clark considered the show one of the best m the South Island. ,/ ht Breed Poultry —The c»old pencil Hamburgs exhibited ejtceptionaEy good, said F s Creba - ° f Waunate. Entries were up to •art year’s standard, and were reasonably good throughout. Judging in some classes, especially in the black hens, had been close, and these had included some of the best of these birds he had seen for years. In rna J'Z. sections some outstanding exhibits had been entered. -. IJhcks.—This section was up ,0 ,ast year's the judge Mr J F Hayhurst, of Temuka, said. „ The following sections were judged by the following: heavy breeds and juvenile poultry, Mr S. E. Frost (Waipara); light breeds, Mr F. S. Creba (WaiCTem,; t d f Ck ’' Mr , J ’ F Ha >’hurst (Temuka); game fowl and game bantams. Mr J. M.
