MASTER FINED
Pupils Saw Cup On TV (NZ. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY. June 9 A headmaster who allowed pupils to go home to watch a telecast of the 1960 Melbourne Cup has been fined £2O for misconduct. He has appealed against the fine imposed by the New South Wales Public Service Board. The headmaster is Mr Dennis Edward O’Brien, of Narabeen State School. Sydney. On cup afternoon (November 1) only 38 of the school's 190 bojf were at school. the Public Service Board was told yesterday. Parents complained and the Education Department investigated. Mr O’Brien said he allowed the boys to go home because he felt that if they were denied the chance of seeing the telecast, which other children in the dostrict were seeing, they would develop "character deviations leading to delinquent acts.” The boys had arrived at school on Cup day with transistors. They had intended listening to the cup broadcast. Mr O’Brien said he forbade the use of the radios. After seeing tension, besring teasing and bickering, and knowing that nearby convent students were given a half-holiday for the Cup, he decided to let the boys go home. The boys are in the normal primary-school age group.
