I.M.F.
Sir.—There is no doubt that she World Bank idea, and its terms, are very unpopular here in New Zealand. The reason. I think, is twofold. Mr Hiram Hunter has .the apprehension or uncomfortable feeling that New Zealand may be putting itself in the power of American capitalists—-'just at the moment when death ddtie® are disturbing ours. The other reason affects all parties and classes equally: it u the. feeling that. World Bank membership would be humiliating. This humiliation is doubly galling because we know that we are only in a position to be humiliated because of the merciless sacrifices Britain has made for America no less than ourselves. The second reason is. I think, justified We have been humiliated—because most of my American friends think they have always been inordinately generous. With £200.000 a week going down the butter drain, we have no option but to join.—Yours, etc., RALPH S. WHEELER. Timaru. June 8 1961
