TROTTING TRUSTED FOR FIRST LEG AT NELSON

Winter Cup Tomorrow

The promising tliree«year-old, Trusted, should carry on his winning way in the Nelson Winter Cup tomorrow. This is the first race of the double on the opening day of the Nelson Trotting Club’s winter meeting at Richmond Park. Trusted, a member of W. E. Lowe’s team, was undefeated in his first two race appearances last month. His next appearance was at Ashburton last Monday when he finished strongly from well back at the half-mile for fourth in the Queen’s Birthday Stakes.

Trusted should not be troubled to run out a solid two miles as one of his wins was over 14 furlongs. Nor should a heavy track worry him as he handled the conditions at Ashburton with confidence. C. S. Donald’s bracket of Snuffbox. Nevan and Implore will be in demand, especially if all three are started. Snuffbox could be the pick of the four Three starts ago he was a good second to Count Cavan over two miles at Addington. Implore was a last-start u inner at Ashburton. He is a capable pacer and could be piominent. Nevan is not reliable and will have to be taken on trust. The Oamaru pacer. Worthy

River, recorded a third and a fifth at Ashburton, the latter effort over two miles. The opposition he will encounter will not be as strong and he should be a great place prospect. Contribute won twice at Greymouth on April 3 and has not raced since. He has raced most consistently and if he handles the track condi’ions competently he should be hard to beat. First Song was sixth over two miles at Ashburton on Monday. He has shown speed in his recent racing and could easily upset calculations. The Rakaia trainer, S. D. Edge, will produce ■ Sand Drift. Moneymusk and Montaigne in this raca. Money-

musk faded to tenth over two miles - at Ashburton last Monday, but if he can be restrained until the final furlong before challenging he could be prominent at the finish. Sand Drift is capable of a bold showing but has raced rather disappointingly since he was placed four starts ago at Washdyke. Tongariro. a ,place-gette: at the Thames meeting last month. Loyal Brigade and Red Belle appeal most of the remainder. With the exception of the backmarker. Thumberlina. wh.ch is on 120 yards and does not appeal, the field in the second leg of the double fie Collingwood Handicap, will all start earlier rn the day in the St. Vincent Handicap. Performances in the early race should be the best guide to prospects in this event. Seriatim will only have to race as well as he did at Ashburton, where he was fourth ■ and second, to have a winning chance. He has taken time to become solid and now looks ready to win. The Greymouth trotter. Free Return, -was not dangerous at Addington on May 27 after breaking early. He is better than that effort suggested and should be capable of racing prominently. The Kaikoura mare. Amelia, was runner-up to Tribune on November 3 on her home track at her only appearance this season. She has been well tried but has found a winning run difficult. She is usually most reliable and if she has had sufficient work could be too Isolid for most in the race. I Gay Jillian, Bridget Scott, Ideal and Minstrel Song appeal most of the remainder. Fair weather is forecast, and the track will be in good order. Double fields, with form, are: NELSON CUP, Of £475; 4inin 45eec class; two miles.

Brackets: Implore Snuffbox, and Nevan: Moneymusk. Montaigne, and Sand Drift. Scratched: Sarona, Maud Noble. COLLINGWOOD HANDICAP. Of £200; trotters; 4min 53sec
