Eland Dies At Zoo In Wellington
(N.Z. Press WELLINGTON, June 8. The sick female eland at the Wellington Zoo died today. The curator. Mr G- J. Cutler, said that a postmortem would be held tomorrow but he was fairly certain his diagnosis of a twisted bowel was correct. “It ia an injury that sometime* occur* in animals travelling by ship, or indeed doing any extensive travelling at all," he said. “It Is brought on by kicking and straining, and tinforWyintoto no symptoms appear flor about five days, when H is too late to do much about it.” Referring to th* offer of the donor. Sir Edward Hallstrom, director of Taronga Park Zoo, Sydney, to replace the animal if it, died. Mr Cutler said: “We will wait a while and give the male time to get over hi* loss and settle down before we get another."
