HAIRDRESSERS’ AWARD
Complete Agreement Reached Complete agreement was reached in conciliation proceedings in Christchurch this week on a new award for male hairdressers and tobacconists’ shop assistants in the Marlborough, Nelson, Westland. and Canterbury districts. The negotiations were concluded under the chairmanship of the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr S. W. Armstrong). The agreement will go forward to the Court of Arbitration for issue as a new award. The agreement includes a minimum weekly wage of £l3 10s for male hairdressers, £l2 7s 4d for adult male shop assistants. and £8 13s 3d for adult female shop assistants. Minimum casual rates will be 7s 9d an hour, with a minimum payment of 23s 3d. Many other minor award changes were agreed to. The existing award was negotiated in 1954.
