Hockey INDIANS WIN, 10-0
Harbinder Brilliant (NX. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 2. The touring Indian hockey team beat Franklin 10-0 today, showing themselves masters of stickwork. They did not feel at home for a start, for the surface of the Show Grounds at Pukekohe was a shade uneven. But, after taking 13 minutes to score, they reached the interval four goals ahead and from then their artistry was sheer joy. For every goal the Indians scored, they had at least two shots stopped through luck or good defence. In the early stages the Franklin players, fresh and eager, made as much play as the Indians, the tourists taking some time to show the finely-tempered edge of their hockey. Gurdev Singh was again the master of the inside-right position and B. Patil, another Olympic player, can find the goal very easily, but today’s game confirmed that the 19-year-old Khalsa college student, Harbinder, is outshining his team-mates. He can go through a team by himself, heading like an arrow for the goal. Scorers for the Indians were Harbinder (4), Gurdev Singh (3), B. Patil (2) and J. Jharman, Too many of the Franklin forwards were guilty of passing the ball indiscriminately Franklin’s defence, however, was generally very good. It had the veteran, E. Farley, who stopped countless rushes and,-best of all, M. Lever In goal, who stopped shots of tremendous velocity without flinching.
