CURRENT NOTES

Wahine Club: Mrs Maud Hancox presided at the third hui of the Christchurch Wahine Club, held recently in Begg's Concert Hall. She was installed by chief wahine, Mrs Joan Bissett. Mrs D. Kidd spoke on the traditions, education, handcraft, and cocoa farming of the natives of Ghana. She illustrated her talk with coloured slides and examples of handcrafts. Songs were sung by Mesdames N. Handley, V. Bowman, N. Tanner, and J. Watson. Monologues were given by Mrs S. Keane, and Mrs D Blyth gave a pianoforte solo. A musical playlet was given by Mesdames N. Handley. P. Memory, S. Keane. J. Watson, M. Taylor, and H. Findlay. A musical sketch was given by Mesdames E. Pickles, M. McKay, and J. Russell. Items were given by the club choir, accompanied by Mrs D. Blyth and conducted by Mrs E. Pickles. Beckenham League of Mothers: Mrs S. P. Smith presided at the recent annual meeting of the Beckenham branch of the League of Mothers. Miss W. Pearce spoke on the year she spent: in the United States as a| field scholar. The following! officers were elected: Actingpresident, Mrs S. P. Smith: secretary, Mrs B. Stempa; treasurer. Mrs C. C. Sloper; committee. Mesdames R. C. Varley. P. Smith, and R. Loversidge. Canterbury East C.WI: The following officers were recently elected to the executive of the Canterbury East Centre Country Women’s Institute: President, Mrs E. B. Thompson; vice-presidents. Mesdames J. Preston, O. M. Regan and J. Gillanders: secretary. Mrs J. Goss; treasurer, Mrs H. Widdowson; committee. Mesdames C. R. Varley and E. R. Stanbury. Royal Musical Society Women's Auxiliary: The Women's Auxiliary of the Christchurch Royal Musical Society recently sponsored a film evening, held in the Canterbury Museum lecture hall. The programme was arranged and presented by the museum education officer (Mr Rhys Griffiths). It included a New Zealand National Film Unit film entitled “Green Fingers,” which featured several public and private Christchurch gardens. Other coloured films of general interest were shown. Forty pounds were raised to go towards sending the society choir to Adelaide for the International Arts' Festival in March.

Founders’ Society.—Coloured slides of the Oberammergau Passion Play, Scandinavia. and Germany w r ere shown by Mrs L. Humphreys at a recent meeting of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Founders’ Society. held at the home of the secretary (Mrs M. Jones) The chairman <Mr A. H Oakes) welcomed members and thanked the speaker.
