Teaching Or Education?

Sir. —I support the views of "Fabian.” Successive governments are quite hypocritical in regard to large classes in primary schools. Years and decades go by, yet I still face more than 40 pupils. Years ago, I taught in rooms that, in winter. were cold, crowded, gloomy caverns Now they are warm, crowded, gloomy caverns. I challenge those committee members who possess moral courage, to go from room to room of their schools on the next overcast morning. Often they will find overcrowding combined with poor lighting that would not be tolerated in' industry. As for class numbers, if war broke out. rooms would be built and instructors trained for teaching men how to die. It is a pity that .the authorities cannot put similar enthusiasm and effort into the task of teaching children how to live.— Yours, etc.. CAVE DWELLER. May 29. 1961.
