DEVALUING RAND
“Move Only As Last Resort”

May 29 In spite of last week’s rumours, the balance of informed opinion in Johannesburg and Cape Town was that the South African Government would only devalue the rand as an absolute last resort, the “Financial Times" s«-id today. At the very least, and for obvious and psychological reasons, it was highly unlikely that the currency would be devalued immediately after Wednesday’s inauguration 6f the new Republic, the newspaper said.
Gunmen Driven Away

May 29 Five hooded gunmen yesterday attacked the home of Mr Rowley Arensiein, a Durban lawyer known for his sympathies with Africans, but were driven off by bodyguards. One man was slightly wounded by a bullet Mr Arenstein recently received a letter, signed “Ku Klux Klan,” which threatened his life.
