7.5 Degree Frost Although the ground v

whitened considerably on Saturday night the frost was only 7.5 degrees. The Weather Office at Harewood said that the effect was increased by the presence of the moisture in the ground after the rain on Friday.

Attempt Delayed

An attempt to tow the Picton from the Waimakariri river to Lyttelton yesterday was delayed because of unsuitable conditions at the bar of the river. The pilot cutter Wairangi left Lyttelton at 11 a.m. yesterday and arrived at the Waimakariri bar at 1 p.m. The Wairangi was commanded by the launch master (Captain J. Hardwicke). A Lyttelton pilot, Captain J. Barbour, and the Kaiapni harbourmaster (Captain C. Bell) were also on board. The Picton has a disabled rudder and propeller. “Perfect calm will be needed for the attempt,” said Mr T. Williams, managing director of the agents for the Picton, said yesterday. A close watch would be kept on the bar, and another attemot might be made today. The Pieton went aground in the river on May 12 and was refloated on May 18. Hair Examination The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in Auckland will today be asked to examine what the police believe may be strands of human hair. They were pulled out of the Waitemata harbour on the end of a fishing line by a man on Hobson wharf yesterday afternoon. Crew of the police launch.
