A temporary duty will be imposed from today on certain paper boards and coated printing paper* to protect the iocal industry from increased imports, the Australian Minister of Trade (Mr John McEwen) announced last night This follow* a report by a deptity chairman of the Tariff Board (Mr H. Heyes) on Ballarat Paper Mills Pty., Ltd., Associated Pulp and Paper Mills, Ltd., and Shoalhaven Paper Mill* Pty., Ltd. Mr Heyes said duties had been sought by the companies because their production and sales were falling. Mr McEwen said th* temporary duty, which would be additional to the normal duties, would be at ff>e rate of £2O a ton. It would apply to paper board* known as index, ivory, system and pulp boards, and to coated printing papers not admissible at concessional rate* of duty.
