ATLANTIC RECORD

Three-Hour Crossing

(N.Z.P.A .-Reuter— Copyright) PARIS, May 26

A United States super-sonic jet bomber today flew from New York to Paris in just more than three hours, almost cutting in half the old air speed record. The bomber, a 858 Hustler, flew at twice the speed of sound on some stages of the 3600-mile flight and refuelled in mid-air. Its average speed was 1105 miles an hour. The flight was made to mark the thirty-fourth anniversary of Charles Lindbergh’s solo Atlantic crossing, which took 33j hours. The United States Air Force said today’s crossing was officially timed at 3hr 19min 41sec. and was now awaiting verification from the International Aeronautics Board.

The previous time was 6hr 37min set by a United States jet fighter in 1957, also on the Lindbergh anniversary. The bomber, piloted by Major William Payne, landed at Le Bourget Airport, scene of the French International Air Show. He and the two other members of his crew were cheered by air show officials and visitors when they landed.
