Table Tennis TOWN DEFEATS COUNTRY BY 44 MATCHES TO 28

In one of the closest matches since* the series was instituted. Town beat Country by 44 matches to 28 in the annual fixture at the Lakeside hall. Games were even through most of the evening. Town drawing away only in the second round of singles and in the mixed doubles. Town won the men's singles 14-2, the women’s singles 10-6. and the mixed doubles 6-2, but Country was superior in both the men’s and women's doubles to the extent of three matches to one. The junior contest, run in conjunction, resulted in a 12-all draw. Top Town players, N. Radford and B. D. Williamson, were always comfortably in (control of their matches, but I the Canterbury representatives. K. Stevens-on and K. 1 Cassidy each found one of his opponents too steady. StevenIson lost narrowly to S. Benjnett and Cassidy was enticed by M. Boulton into a halfvolley exchange In which Boulton proved the more adept. Mrs A. Williamson played

mercilessly to beat Country's two provincial representatives. Miss Y. Hart and Miss B. Taylor. Neither had a consistent' answer to Mrs Williamson's tenacious defence and occasional forehand drives. Miss F. Inglis was also too solid for Miss Hart and Miss Taylor. She is gradually returning to her previous top form. The Country supremacy in doubles was achieved after a long series of three-set matches. The Town players did not make sufficient effort to adjust themselves to their unfamiliar combinations. In the junior contest, the victories of the Town boys were offset by those of the Country girls. D. Mcßride (Town), recently returned from the national coaching school, had to fight hard for his victories over R. Watkins and P. Knight. Miss L.
