TOWN-COUNTRY TABLE TENNIS
SEVERAL very promising young players will be given a chance to prove their ability in the annual TownCountry table tennis fixture, which will be played at Lakeside this evening. An assessment of the teams indicates that Town should be much too strong in the men’s section, but that Country will do better in the women’s matches. Led by N. B. Radford and B. D. P. Williamson, who would probably be ranked second and third in the province on current form, the Town men make a powerful combination. Supporting them will be K. F. Stevenson and other strong A grade players. In the top singles in the women’s section Misses B. Taylor and Y. Hart (Country* will oppose Mrs A. Wiliamson and Miss F. Inglis (Town). Competition here will be particularly keen as these four, with Miss C. Halliday, should be disputing the third and fourth positions in this year's provincial side, behind Mesdames T. May and J. Shadbolt Mrs Williamson is a player very much in form at the present time, but Miss Inglis anpears to need a lot more play to bring back to her the ability which took the Canterbury women’s singles title several seasons ago. and won her seventh place on the national ranking lists. Supporting players in the
Town women's team will include Mrs D. J. Read (South Christchurch) and Miss H. Elia (Avonstde). Miss Elia was the province’s second junior girl last season, and she also played with success for the senior representative team against West Coast. In the junior matches the Towm boys’ team of D. McBride. M. Coppen, R. Inns and P. Wylie, looks a strong combination. Miss J. Rich (Country) should dominate the girls’ section, with Miss L. • Elia as top girl in the Town team. Several of the country juniors, especially the girls, may force themselves into consideration for the representative side in later matches.
