TUNA CANNING IN AUSTRALIA
Move For Higher Duties (N.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) MELBOURNE. A large-scale tuna industry in Australia could be an important saver of foreign exchange, a Tariff Board inquiry was told recently. The Fish Canners’ Association was applying for increased import duties on tuna from overseas. The chief tariff officer of the Chamber of Manufacturers of New South Wales (Mr C. E. Gandry) said higher duties were needed to enable the local tuna-canning industry to expand and to compete with imports from the lowcost countries of Japan and Peru. It was unrealistic to expect the industry to attract capital if its market was threatened by imports. Mr Gandry said the value of imported canned fish was almost equal to the value of the whole of the fish caught in Australia.
