NEW SHEEP SPRAYS
“Others Besides Diazinon”
It should not be assumed that diasinon is the only compound which may be used in place of aldrin and dieldrin as a sheep spray. There are other chemicals with similar properties which can also be used, and these and other substances which may be discovered in the future are likely to be. incorporated in proprietary preparations for use as plunge dips, showers, tip sprays, and dusts, says a letter from the livestock superintendent of the Department of Agriculture (Mr H. Doyle*. Mr Doyle was adding to a comment he had made to a letter from a correspondent, E.M.R.. on sheep sprays. The correspondent had said he was disturbed at the report that dieldrin and aldrin wore to be deregistered as sheepdipping materials. If insecticides to be used in their place did not have their 'creeping*’ qualities, thousands of pounds worth of tip-spraying and dusting machines would have to be scrapped, he said. Mr Doyle had replied that it was expected that aldrin and dieldrin would be replaced by diazinon, which had similar properties to the two older insecticides without their disadvantages.
