KELP DESTROYED AFTER RICCARTON GALLOP

Kelp shattered a sesamoid bone about half way through a trial at Riccarton yesterday and was destroyed. He was an acceptor for the Waimate Cup tomorrow.

Kelp won six races, five of them for Mr and Mrs W. R. Woodham, of Christchurch, who bought him for 320gns at the Chelandry Stud dispersal sale at Invercargill in February, 1958.

Kelp won once as a two-year-old for his breeder, Mr W. E. Hazlett. The Geraldine Cup was his only open-class win. Kelp was galloping with Kastanea <G. R. Baldwin) and Whiohau (R. J. Blair) when his leg gave out. Kastanea did well to win the mile trial by a length, for he was the best part of four lengths behind Whiohau at the start. Kastanea ran the mile in Imin 49 2-ssec and the final three furlongs in 40 4-ssec. Trialists. had soft footing, and galloped on one of the smallest tracks, the outside of the No. 9 grass. On Terms Last Link (A. J. Stokes) and Packwood (P. J. Kempton) were abreast after running a mile in Imin 47 2-ssec, the final three furlongs in 39 4-ssec. Last Link had the outside running and horses on the outside were at quite a disadvantage on the small oval. They will meet in the Waitangi Champion Hack Handicap at Waimate. Herbs (O. Anning) loafed from the mile until a stablemate Rondar (C. T. Wilson)

joined in at the six furlongs. They ran home from there in Imin 22 2-ssec, and recorded 39 l-ssec for the final three furlongs. The stablemates Blonde Sprite (W. Beck) and King Lear <G. W. Mein) sprinted six furlongs in Imin 20 l-ssec. the last three in 41sec.

High Treasure (L. McGuire) and Impressana (W. Beck) appeared to be fairly evenly matched over half ’a mile. They sprinted the last three furlongs in 39sec.

Rayspar CN. Cowles) followed in 40 2-ssec. Francisco (Mrs V. Clutterbuck) ran five furlongs, the last three in 38 2-ssec. He is being prepared for the Trial Stakes, his only engagement at the Dunedin winter meeting. Winter Plans

Cheyenne (C. T. Wilson) finished his work by running three furlongs in 40sec. His programme will include races at the Dunedin meeting before the Whyte Handicap at Trentham. The stablemates Talkative (D. N. Hadfield) and Navarone (P. Graham) finished their work with three furlongs in 39 l-ssec. Talkative has shaped like a stayer, and may run well in the Waitangi Champion Hack Handicap at Waimate. .By Arrangement (T. Wilson), another Waitangi Handicap candidate, ran the last three furlongs of this work in 41 2-ssec. Ruffle (G. W. Mein) showed a sharp finishing sprint to shade Cheroot <R. B. Taggart) after giving that Mainbrace gelding a start from the home turn. Ruffle ran the distance in 33 3-ssec. She may make an impression against the hack sprinters at Waimate if she can capitalise on one of the inside barrier positions in a capacity field.
