FRUIT CANNERY ON RAROTONGA

Growers Preparing To Meet Demand

Pineapple growers on Mangaia in the Cook Islands are preparing to meet the demand of the new fruit and fruit-juice cannery on Rarotonga.

Fertilisers are being used extensively and. as a result, plantations about 14 months old are bearing fruit. It is expected that about 200 cases will be ready this month. If tiansport can be arranged the fruit will be sold or processed in Rarotonga. The Cook Islands Department of Agriculture has la nched a programme to induce artificial flowering which, by causing early fruiting, will ensure a constant supply for the cannery. So far 72 growers with healthy plantations have joined. It is expected that regular shipments to the cana«*ry will bewn in mid-August.
