NASSELLA CONTROL

Alleged Lack Of Co-operation

Property reports from rangers came forward to the monthly meetings of the North Canterbury Nassella Tussock Board, but was any action taken? Mr R. S. Shearer asked at yesterday's meeting of the board. Mr Shearer said that there appeared to be a lack of follow-up work on the basis of these reports. Some indicated that some landowners were not getting rid of the tussock the rangers found in their inspections. “We can't do anything unless we serve a notice to erub ” the chief inspector <Mr W. L. Kay> said. Serving notices had been in abeyance for some time.

Mr H. E. Connor said no notices had been served for at least two years.

The chairman (Mr T. G. Maxwell) suggested that rangers should suggest to landowners whose properties shmved lack of control that should sign service agreements with the board for the grubbing gangs. The farmer’s reaction to this suggestion could be appended to the ranger's report.

Members said that farmers whose properties were reported to show increasing tussock infestation or who were not grubbing out nassella found on previous inspections should be asked to sign service agreements.

A-motion to this effect was carried.
