SHEEP SHOT

Skins Found In Thick Scrub

Two sheepskins—one with a bullet hole through it—were found on a farm near the Rakaia rivermouth on Wednesday. “It looks as if Mimebod}' has had some free mutton at our expense," said one of the owners (Mr M. R Dolan 1 yesterday. Mr Dolan and his brother <Mr P Dolan' discovered the skins while erecting a new fence on their land which runs adjacent to the riverbed near where the river Changed course several months ago. The skins were about nine yards apart, and partly hidden in thick scrub. One still had the head attached and on close examination, it was found that the sheep—-a good quality hogget—had been shot.

Signs that the sheep had been gutted were also found near the skins.

"Anyone found on our property with a rifle from now on will naturally be under immediate suspicion.” said Mr M. Dolan, adding that the matter had been placed in the hands of the police. He could not say exactly how long the sheep had been dead, but estimated that one had been shot about a month ago and the other several weeks before that. A close watch would be kept on the remaining 250 sheep, he said.
