Fishing Boat Beached

(N.Z. Press Association) WHAKATANE, May 25. A Whakatane fishing trawler, the Ngaru, was beached two miles west cf Whakatane after it had suddenly developed a leak in six fathoms of water about 2.45 a.m. today. Half an hour after the water entered the boat, the bunks were afloat in the bunkhouse. With three men on board, the Ngaru had been trawling off the Rurima Rock Islands and, carrying about 16001 b of fish, was making for home when the leak was discovered. Mr Doug. Bixley, of Hastings. was asleep at the time. He was awakened and stepped ankle deep in water. The two other men were Whakatane fishermen, Messrs B. McCormack and T. Me-. Cracken. By this afternoon the ship had settled in 'he soft sand and breakers were playing over the wheelhouse The trawler, built in Auckland in 1905, is expected to be wrecked.
