TROTTING ZANY FOR WINTER HANDICAP

First Leg At Addington Tomorrow

Zany is expected to overcome her handicap of 24 yards and gain her second win for the season in the Winter Handicap at Addington tomorrow. This race is the first leg of the double at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting. Zany has not met such a weak field for a long time. She has shown plenty of ability in her recent racing, but luck has been against her more often than not. She w'as a little disappointing on the second night at the recent Forbury Park meeting, but the easy state of the track could have been against her.

Zany 14 usually a reliable beginner and if she reproduces her best form on the firm track expected at Addington, she should jur about win. Her trainer, C. S Donald, will also be represented by Queen’s Glow, a capable mare on her day. She could prove to be a worthwhile second string for the •table.

Vanity Scott has never looked fitter than she did at Forbury Park. She finished an unlucky third on the first night after receiving at least two checks. A week later in a eimilar race she was all but knocked down in an accident and lost all chance. She has paced sound races st times ■nd her best would be gooc

enough to give her more than an outside chance in this field.

Sexiant finished a good third in a sprint at Addington on April 1 at the second of three starts for the season. His most recent appearance was at Methvan last month. He was checked at the start and did not recover from the knock. He showed he was close to his best with a solid finishing run for third at the Addington trials last week. Sextant has always shown plenty of ability, but has not been an easy horse for D. P. Grice to keep sound. He looks better than for some time and it will not surprise if he upsets calculations. Raven Dev. had a race at Methven and two at Forbury Park. Those races should have brought him close to his peak and after a sound run at last week’s trials, he must be given a chance. Raven Dew is no champion, but he is good enough to make a bold showing in this type of race. He has a weak form background, but will not be at a very long price tomorrow. Frown’s Prospect# Frown is the backmaricer on 36 yards in this field. He was fifth over 13 furlongs at Forbury Park on April 29, a smart effort as he covered a considerable amount of extra ground approaching the straight. Frown has been a difficult horse for his Duntroon trainer, I. S Sutherland. to keep sound. If he has had sufficient work and paces one of his best races, he will not be out of his depth in spite of his awkward handicap. Bespoke and Bonnie Lustre have both paced sound races at times and if they receive runs to suit them, they could take a prominent part in the finish.

Great Dillon and Lavengru have also raced well enough at times to be given a chance of upsetting calculations. However, their recent efforts have not been encouraging and they should be safely held by Gay Baron. Gay Baron, which will start from 12 yards, showed speed until the final furlong at last week’s trials. He was a big disappointment at Forbury Park, but his run at the trials suggested that he could easily make amends for those failures.

The others in the race make very little appeal, although Pacemaker could be a prospect should the track be affected by rain. Moon Boy and Au Fait are expected to dominate betting on the second leg of the double, the Members’ Handicap. which has drawn an outstanding field of trotters. They will not have things their own way in this field and determined opposition can be expected from When. Merry Nora. Tarseal. Spinster Scott and others.

Further unsettled weather is forecast but provided there is no more heavy rain, the track should provide
