Some Big Upsets

Stars of the international tennis circuit began to topple as the French championships reached the critical stages yesterday.
The Wimbledon finalist last year. Sandra Reynolds, dropped out to a 36-year-old Hungarian. Mrs Suzy Kormoczy.
The American champion and French singles title-holder. Darlene Hard, lost to West Germany’s Edda Buding.
Their elimination left Maria Bueno (Brazil) a clear favourite to add the French title to her Wimbledon and Italian crowns.
Miss Buding’s 6-2, 6-3 win over Miss Hard was surprisingly easy Miss Reynolds lost to Mrs Kormoczy. 5-7, 6-3. 5-7. in a fluctuating battle.
In the men's singles, the biggest upset was the defeat of the eighth-seeded B. Wilson < Britain) by the unseeded Frenchman. G. Pilet. 6-8, 5-7, 1-6.
Pilet now goes on to a quar-ter-final battle with the Italian top seed, N. Pietrangeli, who is attempting to take the title for the third successive year. Only two men and a woman
are left to fight out the singles quarter-finals out of a total entry of 11 men and 10 women.
R. Laver and R. Emerson are left in the men's event, and Margaret Smith in the women's. Yesterday. R. Hewitt. B Phillips-Moore. J. Lehane. Lesley Turner, and Mary Reitano were all beaten.
